For Apprentices

Do I have to pay for the training?+

No. This program is about earning an hourly wage from day one, including all classroom time. You don't owe tuition.

Do I need a high-school diploma or GED?+

Most sponsors require a high-school diploma or GED, but a few accept apprentices currently enrolled in a CTE program. Check the specific sponsor's requirements when you apply.

Do I need experience?+

No experience needed. The whole point of an apprenticeship is to learn the trade from scratch — supervised, with classroom backup, and getting paid while you do it.

How long does the full program take?+

Typically 2 years from entry to Journey worker.

What if I want to switch employers mid-program?+

You may be able to continue your apprenticeship with another participating employer or program sponsor. NRAP can help you identify potential sponsors in your state or connect you with the appropriate apprenticeship or workforce organization for assistance. Previously completed training and on-the-job learning may be reviewed by the receiving program to determine what can be credited toward your apprenticeship.

Will I have a job after I finish?+

You're employed by your sponsoring contractor throughout the program, so you're working the whole time. Finishing puts a recognized credential behind you when you look for your next role.

For Employers

How much does it cost to sponsor an apprentice?+

Costs vary by program and sponsoring entity. Employers should plan for the apprentice's wages, any apprenticeship or program fees charged by the sponsoring entity, and potential training or instructor fees. Additional costs may include required safety training, materials, assessments, or related technical instruction. Funding assistance may be available to help offset some of these costs. NRAP can help connect employers with the appropriate state or local workforce resources to explore available WIOA, OJT, apprenticeship, and other workforce funding opportunities.

Do I get tax credits?+

Tax credits and other tax incentives related to apprenticeship programs may be available and vary by state, employer, and program. Employers should consult with their qualified tax advisor to determine whether any federal, state, or local tax incentives apply to their specific circumstances. NRAP does not provide tax or financial advice.

What if the apprentice quits or doesn't work out?+

Apprentices can leave the program; you can also dismiss an apprentice for performance or safety reasons. There's no contractual lock-in.

How long until they're productive on a crew?+

Apprentices can contribute from the start by performing tasks appropriate to their experience and skill level under proper supervision. As they gain on-the-job experience and complete related technical instruction, they build their skills, take on greater responsibility, and become increasingly valuable members of the crew.

Education & Training Partners

How does NRAP fit with SkillsUSA / high-school CTE?+

NRAP helps create a pathway from career exploration and CTE education into a registered roofing apprenticeship. Students who gain exposure to roofing through SkillsUSA, CTE programs, or other work-based learning opportunities can continue developing their skills through participating apprenticeship programs. Prior CTE coursework or training may be recognized toward apprenticeship requirements when it aligns with the program curriculum and is approved by the registered apprenticeship sponsor.

How can my organization participate in NRAP?+

NRAP works with apprenticeship sponsors, training providers, education partners, workforce organizations, and industry associations to help expand access to registered roofing apprenticeship. The role of each partner varies based on the program and local resources. Organizations interested in supporting apprenticeship training, instruction, facilities, employer engagement, or other program needs are encouraged to contact NRAP to discuss partnership opportunities.

Do we have to use NCCER curriculum?+

Yes. The credential portability depends on it. The Standards filed with USDOL / SAA require NCCER alignment.
