Credentials & Career Pathway
Stackable credentials. None of them go to waste.
NRAP apprentices don't earn a single piece of paper at the end of the program — they earn a stack of credentials along the way. Each one is portable, each one is recognized. Each one increases your value and earning potential.
- 1
OSHA 10-Hour Safety Certification
First weeks of Pre-Apprentice
The baseline safety credential for working on a job site. Required by most general contractors. Carries weight everywhere — not just in roofing.
- 2
NCCER Core Curriculum
Year 1 — Phase 1 (75 classroom hours)
Foundational construction skills shared across trades, delivered across 75 classroom hours during Year 1 — Phase 1. Once you have Core, you can pivot across construction trades, not just roofing.
- 3
NCCER Roofing Level I
End of Year 1 (44 classroom hours)
Industry-standard credential earned at the end of Year 1 after 44 classroom hours, signaling you can perform structured roofing tasks under supervision. NCCER credentials transfer throughout the USA — recognized by employers in all 50 states.
- 4
NCCER Roofing Level II
End of Year 2 (144 classroom hours)
Advanced credential covering complex systems, leadership fundamentals, and estimating basics, completed at the end of Year 2 after 144 classroom hours. The handoff into Journeyworker work.
- 5
USDOL Certificate of Completion
Program completion
The federal credential. Recognized in all 50 states, by federal contractors, and by industry employers. The closest the trades have to a portable degree.
- 6
Articulated college credit
Variable
Some community colleges may award college credit for completed NCCER curriculum. Credit availability varies by program and institution. Apprentices should check with their apprenticeship sponsor to determine whether additional college credits are available or offered through their specific program.
The full career ladder
A roofing career doesn't end at Journeyworker. From Journey worker, apprentices advance into crew lead, foreman, estimator, project manager, or business owner. NRAP's credentials are the foundation, but the ladder above Journeyworker is long.
